Wondering whether Flex works where you live? The short version: Flex works anywhere you rent. Whether you're in a big apartment building, a single-family home, or anything in between — and whether you pay through a rent portal or directly to your landlord — you can use Flex to split your rent into two smaller payments. Here's how it works, and how to get started.
The short answer
Yes — Flex works anywhere you rent. You make your 1st payment when rent is due, and your rent is paid in full and on time. If Flex already works with your building, your rent payment is sent directly; if not, Flex gives you a virtual debit card or bank account you can use to pay it yourself.
Works anywhere you rent
Flex is built to work wherever you live and however you pay:
- Wherever you live. A big apartment building, a single-family home, or anything in between.
- However you pay. Through your rent portal or directly to your landlord — Flex works either way.
- It moves with you. If you move, just update your address and rent amount in the app. No need to reapply.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
- If Flex already works with your building, your rent is paid directly to your property — you just make your Flex payments.
- If your building isn't set up with Flex yet, you can still use it. The only difference: if your property isn't listed, Flex gives you a virtual debit card or bank account, and you use it to pay your rent yourself, the same way you'd use any card or bank details on your building's payment page. This is completely normal if you rent from a smaller landlord or a building that hasn't linked up with Flex yet.
- If you pay your landlord directly (no online portal), your landlord just completes a simple one-time setup so they can get paid. Once that's done, your rent is paid directly to your property, and you'll make your payments to Flex.
How to get started
Getting set up takes just a few minutes:
- Check your eligibility. Create an account and Flex runs a soft credit check to see if you're approved. Checking your eligibility won't impact your credit score, and there's no commitment.
- See your split upfront. Flex shows you exactly how your rent will be split, including payment amounts and pricing, before you decide. No surprises, no hidden fees.
- Choose your 2nd payment date. Pick a due date later in the month that works with your paycheck and bills — your full payment schedule is shown upfront.
- Your rent gets paid. Make your 1st payment when rent is due, and your rent is paid in full and on time.

What Flex costs
Flex keeps pricing straightforward. Your Flex membership is $5.99 per month. When Flex sends your rent payment to your property, there's a 0.5% processing fee of your total rent amount, and if you split your rent into installments you'll also pay a personalized split fee of up to 3% — always shown upfront before you confirm. The split fee is based on how much you borrow and cannot be reduced with early repayment. Paying with a credit card adds a 2.5% surcharge.
There are no late fees from Flex and no growing balances. Please note, fees may still be assessed at your property’s discretion.
What you can pay with Flex
Flex isn't just for rent. You can also split everyday bills — like car payments, utilities, and phone — and even your mortgage into two smaller monthly payments, so more of your money lines up with when you get paid.
Why renters choose Flex
- Choose your 2nd payment date. Line up your Flex payment with your paycheck — flexibility many alternatives don't offer.
- Build credit history with rent reporting. Flex reports your on-time rent payments to TransUnion, helping build your on-time payment history.
- No late fees, no growing balances. Just straightforward pricing you can plan around.
FAQs
Do I need my landlord or building to approve Flex?
If you pay rent through an online portal, you can use Flex without involving your property manager — they don't even need to know you're using it. If you don't use a portal, your landlord just completes a simple one-time setup so they can get paid, and Flex guides you both through it.
What if my building isn't listed in the app?
You can still use Flex. Choose “my property isn't listed,” enter your address, and Flex sets you up with a virtual debit card or bank account you can use to pay your rent yourself.
How does my rent actually get paid?
If Flex works with your building or rent portal, your rent payment is sent directly on your behalf. If not, Flex gives you a virtual debit card or bank account to pay through your portal. Either way, your rent is paid in full and on time.
Does using Flex affect my credit?
Checking your eligibility won't affect your credit score. And when you turn on rent reporting, Flex reports your on-time payments to TransUnion, which can help you build credit history over time.
Can I still use Flex if I move?
Yes — Flex works anywhere you rent, so your membership moves with you. Just update your new rent details in the app to keep using it.
